Choosing the right undergarment is a delicate affair. Despite being the most intimate piece of clothing, men often purchase their underpants as an afterthought, rarely giving them the attention they deserve. Indeed, picking the perfect pair is equally important as finding the proper suit that best fits your frame. Nowadays, men’s underwear has come a long way from the traditional tidy whities and are currently available in varying hues, fabrics and designs. That being said, MNSWR asked WAHTS founder Karin Kostense how to select a sensible pair that truly suits your style.
Puzzled by the lack of luxury men’s underwear brands that pay significant attention to craftsmanship and detail, Ulex and Karin Kostense launched WAHTS in 2012. The label aims to redefine traditional underwear styles, offering a range of premium fits and fabrics. Selected as one of the world’s most innovative, new brands by PROJECT creative director Tommy Fazio, WAHTS employs a fashion-minded approach to men’s undergarments, combining timeless simplicity with contemporary craftsmanship.
When it comes to men’s underpants, comfort and quality are key. “As it’s the first layer that touches your body, make sure you go for a great fabric,” Kostense says. “All our boxers are made from long staple cotton, which gives it a nice, soft touch and is durable at the same time. The quality and feel of the elastic waistband is also very important. You want to have ultimate comfort and a seamless contour.”
Another point of consideration is the underwear’s fit. “The amount of support you like determines the fit and fabric you need to look for,” Kostense explains. “WAHTS boxers, for example, are slim fit and have a lower waist, which is a matter of contemporary style.” Given the diversity of men’s shapes and sizes, knowing your preferred fit is a definite must.
“Try to look for underwear that matches your style. It’s a way of defining your individuality. No day is the same and neither is your look. Nor should be your underwear.” As a rule, big, bold brand logos on the waistband should be avoided at all costs. The same goes for undergarments that are too high or that remind you of your grandfather’s drawers. “Synthetic fabrics are not very sophisticated,” Kostense claims “and neither are plain-white, old-school slips.” While you may have your preferences when it comes to undergarments, choose a pair that suits your personality.
At the end of the day, dressing well is a sign of good manners. “Normally, you think of the occasion before getting dressed,” Kostense says. “Why not also consider which undergarment matches that occasion?” Be it a business appointment, an hour at the gym or a weekend away, you should always look and feel your very best. “Not only are your underpants the first piece of clothing you put on in the morning,” Kostense reveals, “it is also the last thing you’ll be wearing when getting undressed. Make sure it’s still in line with your overall look, so that it will never disappoint at your moment suprême.”
With this in mind, it would be wise to consider your options when shopping for your undergarments, rather than grabbing the nearest multi-pack while standing at the checkout line. As with purchasing an impeccably tailored suit or a handcrafted pair of shoes, you should never sacrifice comfort and quality. “True style is all about personality,” Kostense says. “We think that men want to feel good and look sophisticated in their underwear.” Just because no one else can see them, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care. It is simply a matter of choosing the right pair that best works for you. Take a look at their collection on Wahts.com.
